Mauritius backs regional Action Plan on major marine pollution incidents

Mauritius is set to endorse the draft Regional Contingency Plan aimed at strengthening preparedness and coordinated response to major marine pollution incidents across the Western Indian Ocean.

The Plan will be tabled for discussion and adoption at the 12th Meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP12) to the Nairobi Convention, scheduled for October 2026 in Tanzania.

It will establish a mechanism for mutual assistance among Western Indian Ocean countries, enabling competent national authorities to collaborate to coordinate and integrate their responses to marine pollution incidents affecting, or likely to affect, their territorial seas, coasts and related interests or to incidents surpassing the available response capacity of each of these countries alone.
