Visite de la délégation de l’Architecture du Yaoundé à la préfecture maritime de Brest, le 2 mars 2023.

The Master Planning Conference (MPC) for exercise Grand African Nemo 2024 will be held in Yaoundé (Cameroon) from June 4 to 6, 2024. It will bring together not only representatives of the Yaoundé Maritime Safety and Security Architecture and the 19 navies of the countries bordering the Gulf of Guinea, but also numerous regional, European and international partners.

Several working groups will plan the scenarios, addressing the concerns of all stakeholders. Themes addressed will include the fight against illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing, piracy, drug trafficking and illicit trafficking, pollution control and legal finish.

GRAND AFRICAN NEMO

GRAND AFRICAN NEMO is an operational cooperation exercise of a highly international nature, the aim of which is to contribute to reinforcing the security and safety of maritime spaces with a view to developing a blue economy in the Gulf of Guinea, by supporting the Yaoundé Process.

Organized by the Architecture de Yaoundé and supported by the French Navy, this major annual regional exercise brings together the navies of the nations bordering the Gulf of Guinea, partner navies and numerous regional, European and international partners working to combat maritime insecurity in the area.

The 2024 edition of the exercise will aim to surpass last year’s results. The emphasis this year is on scenario planning methodology, to ensure that the exercise is as realistic as possible. An ambitious training program will be developed during the conference. This will enable us to better prepare our stakeholders to understand, anticipate and respond to threats in the Gulf of Guinea.

The Gulf of Guinea

Stretching over 6,000 kilometers of West African coastline, from Senegal to Angola, the Gulf of Guinea exports 50% of Africa’s oil. Situated at the crossroads of major shipping routes, the region is home to significant natural resources, notably oil and fish, as well as minerals that are ideal for the development of illicit activities.

African NEMO exercises

Since the Yaoundé Summit in 2013, the French Navy, in cooperation with the Yaoundé Architecture, has organized joint African NEMO patrols three to four times a year, as well as a major annual Grand African NEMO exercise, which brings together a larger number of units and operational centers in complex scenarios.

These recurring exercises have a single objective: to reinforce the ability of the Yaoundé Maritime Safety and Security Architecture and the navies of the bordering states to cooperate and act together as part of the State’s action at sea.
