Exercise IBSAMAR Concludes
The tri-national maritime exercise involving the navies of South Africa, Brazil and India coded Exercise IBSAMAR VIII held in South Africa from 07 October 2024 concluded at Simon’s Town today, 16 October 2026. The exercise involved the South African frigate AMATOLA, the Brazilian frigate Defensora and the Indian frigate culminated with a capability demonstration held at Simons town close to the South African Naval base. The dignitaries viewed the capability demonstration from Wardroom Job Maseko, Simon’s Town, Cape Town.
Exercise IBSAMAR VIII advances healthy naval relations and invigorates interoperability between South Africa, Brazil and India. Whilst naval interoperability and healthy relations are fostered between the three participating countries, concomitantly the Indian, Atlantic and Pacific Oceans are safeguarded. Though military exercises may be interchangeably referred to as War Games, these exercises must never be confused in literal terms as games as they are real-time training and simulations of war and how militaries involved in exercise would respond should the simulated scenario arise in real war times.
These exercises are aimed at strengthening the implementation of various international laws governing militaries and how they should legally and humanely respond or engage. Exercise IBSAMAR VIII was aimed at the implementation of international laws governing the safeguarding and sustainable utilisation of ocean resources and generally how to confront threats such as piracy, trafficking and illegal plundering of ocean resources.
