Ghana Strengthens Sustainable Fisheries Efforts with New Partnership

The Ministry of Fisheries and Aquaculture has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Blue Ventures Conservation to enhance sustainable fisheries management in Ghana.

The agreement is expected to support ongoing government efforts to promote responsible fishing practices and protect marine resources across the country.

Speaking at the signing ceremony, the Chief Executive Officer of Blue Ventures Conservation, Ebrima Saidy, highlighted the timeliness and importance of the partnership.

He commended the leadership of the Minister for Fisheries and Aquaculture, Hon. Emelia Arthur, and stressed the need for strong collaboration between Blue Ventures Conservation and the Ministry to achieve shared goals.

Mr. Saidy also expressed appreciation for the government’s ongoing efforts in the fisheries sector and reaffirmed Blue Ventures Conservation’s commitment to working closely with stakeholders to deliver meaningful impact.

He further invited the Minister to speak at the 11th Our Ocean Conference, scheduled to take place in Kenya in June 2026.

In her remarks, Hon. Emelia Arthur expressed gratitude to the Blue Ventures Conservation team for their continued support.

She reaffirmed the Ministry’s commitment to strengthening the fisheries sector through strategic partnerships and sustainable practices.

The Minister emphasized the importance of prioritizing compliance over enforcement in addressing Illegal, Unreported, and Unregulated (IUU) fishing, noting that this approach would yield more effective and lasting results.

She added that the MoU aligns with Ghana’s national interests and contributes to global efforts in fisheries conservation.

The partnership will focus on several key areas, including policy, legal and institutional support; fisheries law enforcement; capacity building and training; scientific research and data collection; community engagement and co-management; marine conservation and ecosystem protection; community livelihood empowerment; and monitoring, evaluation, and learning (MEL).

This collaboration marks a significant step forward in Ghana’s commitment to safeguarding its marine resources and ensuring the long-term sustainability of the fisheries sector.
