LiMA Security Officials Participate In U.S. Coast Guard Reciprocal Port Security Program
Liberia Maritime Authority (LiMA) Security Department officials have concluded a reciprocal port security visit to the United States Coast Guard Detroit Headquarters recently. The delegation comprised the Associate Director for International Shipping and Port Security, Edward K. Thomas, Famod Kanneh, Corporate Security Director/PFSO of the National Port Authority (NPA) and Habib Sheriff of APM Terminals.
During the visit, the delegation gained useful insights into the role, responsibility and security procedures at the Detroit Riverfront Public Port Facility. The team also visited the Detroit Salt Company to experience effective access control measures in the United States context.
According to LiMA ISPS Chief Thomas, the team toured the Cleveland Cliffs and Toledo Distribution Facility. “During the tour, we observed that both facilities demonstrated a satisfactory level of compliance with the ISPS Code, indicating their effective implementation of security measures and protocols in line with international standards,” Mr. Thomas stated.
He added that they witnessed the effective use of technology such as biometric access control systems; strong coordination between security personnel and port management and a well maintained security equipment including screening devices and surveillance systems.
The delegation is recommending the introduction regimented technological innovations to safeguard against cyber threats and prevent unauthorized access to port facilities across Liberia.
