Merchant Ships or Commercial Ships

Also known as commercial ships, merchant vessels or commercial vessels, merchant ships are ships or boats designed to be used for purely commercial purposes.

They are divided into five main families: cargo ships (or “goods transport ships“, or “freighters“) intended for the transport of goods, dry or liquid; passenger ships intended for the transport of people, on various routes and with different levels of comfort; specialized ships, service vessels, and assistance ships. Each of these is divided into sub-families, as we will see below.
