NIGERIA – NATIONAL HYDROGRAPHIC AGENCY TO HOST 2026 WORLD HYDROGRAPHY DAY CELEBRATION

The National Hydrographic Agency (NHA), in collaboration with the Nigerian Hydrographic Society (NHS), is set to host the 2026 World Hydrography Day (WHD) celebration on 20 June 2026 at the Lagos Oriental Hotel, Lagos.

Observed annually by Member States of the International Hydrographic Organization (IHO), World Hydrography Day serves to raise global awareness of the vital role hydrography plays in ensuring safe navigation, enhancing maritime security, protecting the marine environment, strengthening coastal resilience, and promoting sustainable ocean governance.

The theme for this year’s celebration, “Transforming How Ocean Data Is Shared,” underscores the growing need for improved accessibility, interoperability, and seamless dissemination of hydrographic information through modern technologies and innovative data-sharing platforms. It also highlights the critical importance of ocean data in supporting evidence-based decision-making and driving the growth of the Blue Economy.

As part of the activities marking the celebration, the Agency will organize a special Hydrography Open Day on Saturday, 13 June 2026. The event will feature guided tours aboard the Nigerian Navy Hydrographic Vessels NNS LANA and NNS OCHUZO in Lagos, as well as visits to the Nigerian Navy Hydrographic School (NNHS), Port Harcourt. Participants will have the unique opportunity to gain first-hand insight into hydrographic surveying operations, nautical chart production, ocean mapping technologies, and their contributions to national development and maritime safety.

The NHA hereby invites national hydrographic authorities, naval personnel, maritime administrators, academics, researchers, commercial survey practitioners, private-sector stakeholders, development partners, students, and all individuals with an interest in hydrography and ocean data management to participate in this landmark event.

The celebration will provide a strategic platform for knowledge sharing, stakeholder engagement, professional networking, and discussions on emerging trends shaping the future of hydrography and marine geospatial information management.

Interested participants are encouraged to register by completing the online registration form available via the link below: https://nha.gov.ng/whd26/2026-whd/

The National Hydrographic Agency looks forward to welcoming stakeholders from across the maritime sector as Nigeria joins the global hydrographic community in commemorating World Hydrography Day 2026.
