The Minister for Foreign Affairs and the Diaspora, Mr. Barry Faure received the Ambassador-designate of the Kingdom of Sweden to the Republic of Seychelles, H.E. Mr. Lars Håkan Åkesson on Monday 25 May 2026 at Maison Queau de Quinssy ahead of his accreditation.
The two diplomats discussed the steady increase in the number of Swedish tourists who visit the Seychelles and noted that direct flights to and from Scandinavia could help improve connectivity and people to people exchanges.
Capacity building in various domains was also raised during the meeting, whereby Ambassador Åkesson noted that Swedish universities offered programmes in English. Minister Faure also inquired about training in the fields of Agriculture and Tourism noting that Sweden had excellent institutions catering to capacity building in these sectors.
Ambassador Åkesson also touched on a Memorandum of Understanding between the Seychelles Port Authority (SPA) and the RISE Research Institutes which aims at making Port Victoria a sustainable and ‘greener’ port.
On the topic of Maritime Security, Ambassador Akesson suggested linking the concerned authorities with a company that had developed a technology which could help track illegal fishing. Minister Faure welcomed this collaboration which would be greatly beneficial to the country and would help combat IUU fishing and improve maritime security within our EEZ.
