Somalia to become 124th Member State of the 1992 Fund

The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has notified the Director of the IOPC Funds, Mr Gaute Sivertsen, that the Federal Republic of Somalia deposited its instruments of accession to the 1992 Civil Liability Convention and the 1992 Fund Convention on 26 June 2026.

Both Conventions will enter into force for Somalia on 26 June 2027, bringing the total number of 1992 Fund Member States to 124.

With the longest coastline on mainland Africa, and located along major international shipping routes, Somalia remains at risk of oil pollution from passing tankers.

Director Sivertsen welcomed the accession of Somalia to the 1992 Fund, noting the importance of the financial protection that the regime provides to those affected by oil pollution incidents. He was also pleased to note the deposit by Somalia of instruments of accession to 12 other key IMO treaties, further strengthening the State’s national maritime legal framework.
