South Africa – Mohammed Abdool appointed Chief Executive of the Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA)

Transnet SOC Ltd (“Transnet”) recently announced the appointment of Mohammed Abdool as Chief Executive of the Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA), effective 1 May 2026.

Mohammed brings over 29 years of professional experience in financial leadership, governance, and strategic transformation within South Africa’s public sector. He has served in increasingly senior roles at Transnet, including Chief Financial Officer of TNPA for over 16 years, and most recently as the Acting Chief Executive: TNPA. His career reflects a consistent record of driving accountability, operational efficiency, and sustainable growth. As a custodian of strategic financial leadership, Mohammed has demonstrated expertise in infrastructure ownership structuring, economic regulation and pricing strategies, procurement best practice, risk management and fraud prevention, strategic business turnaround and transformation. He has played a pivotal role in shaping South Africa’s commercial ports, ensuring they remain resilient, competitive, and aligned with national policy objectives.

Some of his key achievements in his career include co-leading the accounting separation of rail operations from rail network business in preparation for open-access reforms as well as directing the corporatisation process of TNPA, focusing on funding, asset valuations, and tax implications. He is recognised as a strategic and tactical leader, a persuasive negotiator, and an ethical executive. His leadership is characterised by resilience, innovation, and a commitment to transformation and stakeholder value.

Mohammed is a Chartered Accountant (South Africa) and a Certified Director (Institute of Directors SA). His academic background includes a Bachelor of Commerce (Accounting), University of the Witwatersrand, Bachelor of Commerce Honours in Accounting, University of Johannesburg, Certificate in the Theory of Accounting (CTA), University of Johannesburg, Advanced Certificate in Financial Management. He has also completed executive leadership programmes at IMD Business School, Switzerland and the Gordon Institute of Business Science, University of Pretoria.
