South Africa – SAS King Sekhukhune I Successfully Completes Operation CORONA Maritime Deployment

Joint Tactical Headquarters Eastern Cape, under the command of Colonel Thembinkosi Patric Ntobela, has successfully concluded the Operation CORONA Maritime deployment in the waters of the Eastern Cape. The deployment commenced on 07 July 2026 and concluded on 07 August 2026.

The month-long maritime deployment was conducted as part of the South African National Defence Force’s ongoing mandate to safeguard South Africa’s maritime domain and contribute towards the protection of the country’s territorial integrity and maritime interests. Operation CORONA Maritime provides an important platform for the South African Navy to conduct maritime border safeguarding activities and support efforts to combat illegal activities along South Africa’s coastline.

The deployment was undertaken by the South African Navy’s SAS King Sekhukhune I, under the command of Commander Lelethu Bixa. The vessel, a Multi-Mission Inshore Patrol Vessel, forms part of the South African Navy’s modern patrol capability and is designed to undertake a range of maritime security and patrol tasks.

Throughout the deployment, the ship and its crew operated in the waters of the Eastern Cape, contributing to maritime domain awareness and the safeguarding of the province’s coastline. The deployment also demonstrated the importance of maintaining a visible and capable maritime presence in support of national security objectives.

The successful execution of the operation was made possible through the professionalism, discipline and commitment demonstrated by Commander Bixa and the entire crew of SAS King Sekhukhune I. Operating at sea for an extended period requires resilience, teamwork and a high degree of operational preparedness, qualities that were consistently displayed throughout the deployment.

At the conclusion of the deployment on 07 August 2026, the successful completion of the mission was welcomed as a reflection of the South African Navy’s continued commitment to fulfilling its constitutional responsibilities and supporting national security efforts along the country’s coastline.

The successful completion of Operation CORONA Maritime once again demonstrates that, through effective leadership, teamwork and operational readiness, the SANDF remains committed to safeguarding South Africa’s maritime borders and contributing to a safer and more secure Eastern Cape coastline.
