Strengthening Regional Maritime Information Sharing in the Western Indian Ocean
On 2 June 2026, the Regional Maritime Information Fusion Centre (RMIFC) organized the Regional Seminar of Maritime Information Fusion and Sharing Centres, hosted at the Prefecture of La Réunion in partnership with the Centre de Fusion de l’Information Maritime de la zone Sud de l’Océan Indien (CFIM SOI).
The event brought together representatives from national and regional maritime centres across the Western Indian Ocean, including the National Focal Point of the Regional Maritime Security Architecture (RMSA) as well as representatives of the National Centre, Joint Operations Centre (JOC), and Maritime Operations Centre (MOC), to strengthen cooperation and advance regional maritime security objectives.
The seminar provided a valuable platform to reinforce cooperation, enhance coordination mechanisms, and further strengthen the network connecting national maritime centres with regional information-sharing structures. In an increasingly complex maritime environment characterized by transnational threats, effective information exchange remains a cornerstone of maritime safety and security.
Participants discussed practical measures to improve interoperability between centres, accelerate information flows, and promote a common understanding of the maritime security picture across the region. Discussions also highlighted the importance of strengthening human resource capacities through the development of standardized training programmes that would foster common procedures, professional competencies, and operational culture across the regional maritime security architecture.
The seminar reaffirmed the collective commitment of regional stakeholders to building a more connected, resilient, and responsive maritime security architecture in the Western Indian Ocean, supporting the shared objective of safer and more secure seas for all.
