Tanger Med in 2022: All indicators in the green, maintaining leadership in the Mediterranean and Africa
The Tanger Med Port Complex recorded, in 2022, a growth on all the indicators of its activity, which allowed it to maintain its leadership in the Mediterranean and in Africa. The Tanger Med Port Complex handled, during 2022, a global tonnage of 107,822,662 tons, up 6% compared to 2021. This traffic should represent about 54% of the total port tonnage in the Kingdom of Morocco.
Regarding container traffic, a total of 7,596,845 TEU (Twenty-Foot Equivalent Units) containers were handled in the Tanger Med port complex in 2022, a 6% increase compared to 2021. Excellent productivity levels were achieved during the past year and the record of 700,000 TEU containers handled per month was exceeded.
Regarding Ro-Ro traffic, the port complex handled 459,091 TIR trucks in 2022, up 13% year-on-year, the statement said, adding that this good dynamic of national exports was mainly driven by the industrial and agri-food sectors with respective growths of 22% and 11%. In addition, 478,589 new vehicles were handled on the two vehicle terminals of the Tangier Med port complex in 2022, up 11% compared to the previous year, noting that the traffic mainly includes 295,393 vehicles for export produced by the Renault factories of Melloussa and SOMACA, and 124,112 vehicles for export produced by the Stellantis (Peugeot) factory in Kenitra.
As for the liquid bulk traffic, it has experienced a 6% growth compared to the year 2021. It recorded a total traffic of 9,260,711 tons of handled hydrocarbons. As for solid bulk traffic, it recorded a total of 404,007 tonnes handled, an increase of 18% compared to last year, mainly thanks to the traffic of sheet metal coils and cereals.
As for passenger traffic, passenger activity has fully resumed in 2022 after the sanitary restrictions related to Covid-19 in 2020 and 2021, pointing out that a total of 2,071,504 passengers passed through the port complex during the past year.
During the year 2022, a total of 14,404 ships docked at the Tangier Med port complex, up 32% compared to 2021, including 961 mega-ships (size over 290 meters).
This growth is mainly due to the increase in productivity of container terminals for the reception and processing of mega-ships, as well as the resumption of passenger traffic crossings especially during the Marhaba 2022 campaign. The performance achieved in 2022 is the result of the commitment and continued collaboration of all Tanger Med partners, including concessionaires, shipowners, and the administrations and authorities involved.
