Gambia Reaffirms Commitment to Reduce Greenhouse Gas Emissions at IMO Assembly
Ambassador Fatou Bom Bensuda, Gambian High Commissioner to London, reaffirmed the government’s commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions at the 34th General Assembly of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) in London.
In her remarks on behalf of the Minister of Transport, Ambassador Bensuda highlighted key initiatives undertaken by The Gambia as an IMO member. These include the ratification and domestication of key IMO instruments, the successful completion of the International Maritime Safety Audit System (IMSAS) audit, and the development of a national transport policy aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). She emphasized that the Gambian government is taking robust measures to mitigate climate change and promote sustainable development.
“Despite being one of the least emitting countries globally, The Gambia is committed to reducing its greenhouse gas emissions,” Bensuda stated.
The High Commissioner also highlighted the development of a National Action Plan specifically focused on greenhouse gas reduction, designed to guide the country’s efforts in environmental protection and sustainable development.
Ambassador Bensuda further noted The Gambia’s unique geographical advantages: “We have a coastal location, navigable rivers, and extensive port facilities. Our river system, largely navigable from the Atlantic Ocean, offers untapped potential for inland waterway transport and enhances regional connectivity.”
