Mauritius strengthens security cooperation with the United States

A delegation of 10 United States (US) officials, led by Major General Miguel Aguilar, Adjutant General of the New Mexico National Guard (NMNG) met the Secretary for Home Affairs, Mrs Kan Oye Fong Weng-Poorun, and the Senior Chief Executive, Mrs Sandrine Valère-Bolli, today at the Prime Minister’s Office in Port Louis in view of strengthening bilateral cooperation across key security areas including policing, disaster resilience, maritime security, cybersecurity and crisis management.

The delegation is currently on a visit to Mauritius from 20 to 23 May 2026 for the signing of the State Partnership programme (SPP) between the Mauritius Police Force (MPF) and the New Mexico National Guard. The SPP is designed to build enduring relationships between U.S. States and partner countries through sustained, practical and mutually beneficial cooperation. The US Authorities have chosen the NMNG to partner with the MPF based on the former’s demonstrated expertise, operational experience and alignment with Mauritius’ strategic priorities.

The Programme will pursue the following key objectives including strengthening the operational and institutional capacity of the MPF through leadership development, professional training programmes and subject-matter expert exchanges, as well as enhancing disaster preparedness and national resilience through cooperation in humanitarian assistance, disaster response, crisis coordination and post-disaster recovery operations.

The SPP will further seek to improve maritime and border security capabilities through collaboration in surveillance, interdiction and enforcement support, taking into account Mauritius’ vast Exclusive Economic Zone.

Other focus areas comprise developing capabilities in cybersecurity and emerging threats, encompassing capacity building in cyber resilience, network defence and incident response as well as advancing operational planning and crisis management frameworks through joint exercises, scenario-based training and the sharing of best practices.
