Alexandria Shipyard Launches Second Tugboat “Ismailia 2” for the Suez Canal Authority

Thursday, December 18, 2025, the launching of the second tugboat, “Ismailia 2”. With a massive bollard pull of 190 tons, the vessel was built entirely within the shipyard’s facilities as part of a contract to build and deliver two specialized salvage tugboats for the Suez Canal Authority (SCA).

​The tugboat is considered the latest and largest of its kind in the Middle East.

​The ceremony was attended by:

-​Rear Admiral Yasser El-Sherif, Director General of the Marine Industries and Services Organization.
-​Rear Admiral Hossam Kotb, Chairman of Alexandria Shipyard.
-​Members of the SCA Board of Directors, – former ASY leaders, – the shipyard’s Administration and workers.

​As a culmination of the strategic partnership between the SCA and ASY, both tugboats under this contract feature identical world-class specifications: ​Length 71.6 m,​Width 18.5 m,​Draft 7 m,​Speed 16 knots,​BP min 190 tons

​R. Admiral Hossam Kotb expressed his pride in this achievement, noting that launching both contracted tugs within the same year is a testament to the shipyard’s efficiency. He emphasized that these giant vessels serve as a global certificate of confidence in Egypt’s ability to carry the “Made in Egypt” banner into new international horizons. He pledged that testing and delivery procedures for “Ismailia 1” would commence in the first quarter of next year.

​He also extended his gratitude to international partners, including:
•​Kongsberg: Main designer and supplier of major equipment.
•​MAN (Germany): Supplier of main engines
•​Bureau Veritas classification society (BV).

​Eng. Nashat Nasr El-Din (SCA Representative) praised ASY for delivering world-class quality in record time. He highlighted that this cooperation fulfills the directives of President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi to build a sophisticated maritime industrial base capable of competing regionally and globally.

​Mr. Nasser Ragab, Regional Director of (BV), concluded by stating that “Ismailia 2” is the most significant addition to the SCA fleet’s history. Key features include:

•​Clean Ship Notation: Ensuring environmentally friendly operations.
•​DP System
•​SCR System:Reduction system to filter carbon emissions, aligning with the SCA’s strategy to transform the Suez Canal into a “Green Canal.”

​This achievement reflects the significant development witnessed by Alexandria Shipyard in recent times, aligning with the Egyptian state’s strategic vision to achieve leadership across all sectors.
