Congo – With the Môle Est, Congo Terminal is breathing new life into sub-regional trade
The port of Pointe-Noire is taking on a whole new dimension. Led by Congo Terminal, construction of the new Môle Est port facility is progressing at a steady pace and is already establishing itself as one of the most significant projects for trade in Central Africa.
By investing in this infrastructure, Congo Terminal aims to position Pointe-Noire as a key gateway for the flow of goods between Central Africa and the rest of the continent. Increased handling capacity, optimised transit times, enhanced logistical competitiveness: the Môle Est is not merely an expansion of port infrastructure but a truly forward-looking initiative designed to foster the development of sub-regional trade.
This ambition translates into several concrete economic benefits: smoother maritime traffic, job creation for young people, increased attractiveness for investors and better integration of the region into global value chains. This development is also part of a wider trend: that of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), whose success depends directly on modern port infrastructure capable of handling the rise in intra-African trade.
“The AfCFTA is set to cause trade in the sub-region to skyrocket; we all know that. The real question is: who will have taken the lead? With the East Quay, Congo Terminal has made that choice: not to wait for growth, but to pave the way for it,” explains Durel Tchitembo, Head of Operational Excellence at Congo Terminal.
With the East Quay, Congo Terminal is not merely building a terminal: the company is writing a new chapter in the economic integration of Central Africa alongside the Congolese authorities. This collaboration is already bearing fruit: volumes handled at the port of PointeNoire have risen from 200,000 TEUs in 2009 to over 1.2 million in 2025. And this is just the beginning: with the Môle Est coming into operation, the 2.5 million TEU mark is already in sight. This trajectory confirms that Congo Terminal is much more than just a port operator: it is a true partner in growth for the national and sub-regional economy.
