Côte d’Ivoire becomes the 13th AU Member State to ratify the revised African Maritime Transport Charter

On Friday 7 June 2024, the Legal Counsel of the African Union (AU), Prof. Hajer Gueldich, received a delegation from the Republic of Côte d’Ivoire for the deposit of the instrument of ratification of the revised_african_maritime_transport_charter. The delegation, led by Ambassador MAES Ennio, Permanent Representative of the Republic of Côte d’Ivoire to the AU, also included the Counsellor in charge of Humanitarian Affairs and the First Secretary in charge of Protocol, Nominations and Education.

Côte d’Ivoire thus becomes the 13th AU Member State to ratify this important Charter, in addition to Angola, Benin, Burkina Faso, Congo, Ethiopia, Gabon, Gambia, Kenya, Mauritius, Mozambique, South Africa and Togo.

Adopted by the Assembly of Heads of State and Government of the Member States of the African Union on 26 July 2010 in Kampala, Uganda, the revised version of the African Maritime Transport Charter aims to strengthen cooperation between States Parties in the areas of maritime transport, inland waterways, ports and related activities. It also seeks to promote cooperation between States Parties and regional and international organisations.

In accordance with Article 49, the Charter shall enter into force thirty (30) days after the deposit of the fifteenth (15th) instrument of ratification. Upon its entry into force, this Charter shall replace the 1994 African Maritime Transport Charter.
