Ghana Celebrates Africa’s Wins on the IMO Council

Ghana has congratulated the African states successfully elected to the Council of the International Maritime Organization (IMO), hailing their victory as a significant step forward for the continent’s representation and voice in global maritime governance.

The IMO Council is the executive body responsible for supervising the work of the organization, which sets global standards for safety, security, and environmental performance of international shipping.

The 40-member Council is divided into three categories.

  • Category A has a representation of 10 States with the largest interest in providing international shipping services.
  • Category B also has 10 States with the largest interest in international seaborne trade.
  • Category C on the other hand consist of 20 States with special interests in maritime transport, ensuring geographical representation.

Liberia retained its seat in Category A, while Nigeria, Egypt, Morocco and South Africa triumphed in Category C, a collective victory that demonstrates a strong, unified voice for Africa on the world maritime stage.

Ghana has pledged its full support for all the elected African States, emphasizing its commitment to furthering African solidarity, representation, and voice within the IMO.

The Director-General of the Ghana Maritime Authority (GMA), Kamal-Deen Ali noted that this successful outcome is an “important milestone for the continent,” underscoring Africa’s growing influence in shaping the future of global shipping.

The Board Chairperson of GMA, Madam Jemilat Jawulaa Mahamah, who is also a former Alternate Permanent Representative of Ghana to the IMO from 2009 to 2014 shared her reflection saying, “the representation of Africa has increased compared to a decade ago signifying the growth of the industry here”.

The GMA will continue to play a formidable role at the global and national levels advancing Ghana’s maritime interest.
