Ghana: Fisheries Enforcement Unit (FEU) on closed season monitoring

On Saturday, 15th July, 2023, personnel of the Fisheries Enforcement Unit (FEU) took the closed season monitoring to some communities in the Greater Accra Region, as part of the beach combing exercise to ensure fishermen observe the close season.

All the communities monitored are complying with the closed season as all the canoes at the beach were berthed and fishermen busily mending their nets or working on their boats.

The team took the opportunity to interact with the fishermen and sensitized them on the need to stop illegal fishing practices such as light fishing, the use of inappropriate gears ie small mesh size (Poly), Monofilament nets, catching of juveniles and non embossment of their canoes, canoe moratorium etc.

The communities visited were; Chorkor, James Town, Teshie, Nungua, Sakumono, TEMA New Town and TEMA fishing harbour.
