Ghana – Greater Accra Fisheries Commission Supports TAAT Phase II Aquaculture Training

The Greater Accra Fisheries Commission, with support from the Technologies of African Agriculture Transformation (TAAT) Programme, organized a three-day step-down training on Phase II of the TAAT Programme for existing and prospective fish farmers, as well as government officials whose roles are directly related to aquaculture development in the Greater Accra Region.

The training was held from 17th to 19th August 2026 at the Ashaiman Aquaculture Demonstration Centre and brought together approximately 100 participants. The programme was spearheaded by the Greater Accra Regional Fisheries Director, Ms. Matilda Ajakameh, and the TAAT Project Focal Person, Mr. Anthony Wassipi, with facilitation by Mr. Gabriel Obeng-Manu, Madam Eleanor Naa Ayeley Aryee, and Mr. Lawrence Afagbegee.

The training covered a combination of theoretical and practical modules. Day One focused on theoretical sessions, Day Two involved practical demonstrations, while Day Three featured plenary discussions on effective tilapia production and farm management.

In support of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs 1, 2, 3, 14 and 15), the training sought to strengthen the technical capacity of existing and prospective fish farmers and relevant government officials, with emphasis on improving the quantity, efficiency and sustainability of commercial tilapia production.

Participants gained theoretical and practical knowledge in the following:

1. Production systems and types of holding facilities
2. Broodstock selection
3. Water Quality Management
4. Sex ratio and Stocking
5. Spawning and Egg collection
6. Hormonal Sex-Reversal
7. Quality Feed and Feeding of fry/ fingerlings
8. Harvesting and marketing of fingerlings
9 Record keeping

Ms. Matilda Ajakameh and Mr. Anthony Wassipi expressed appreciation to the facilitators and participants for their active participation, collaboration and commitment, which contributed significantly to the successful implementation of the TAAT Phase II training programme.
