GPA STRATEGIC COMMUNICATIONS COMMITTEE RETREAT WITH NATIONAL ASSEMBLY MEMBERS ON THURSDAY, 17TH OCTOBER , 2024 AT METZY HOTEL

As part its ongoing stakeholder engagements, the GPA Strategic Communications Committee under the PPP project with Albayrak Group of companies for the expansion of the Banjul Port and construction of a new deep sea port in Sanyang, Thursday held a daylong meeting with National Assembly Members.

The meeting precedes series of other engagements already being planned by the SCC, to ensure parliament is provided with all relevant information relating to the project. Equally, it also seeks to provide a platform for meaningful dialogue and exchange of ideas between GPA and NAMs who are considered critical stakeholders in view of their oversight functions.

At the meeting, GPA Managing Director Ousman Jobarteh, gave a presentation detailing the technical and economic reasons that necessitated the signing of this historic agreement. MD Jobarteh explained that the decision to engage in a concession agreement was informed by several, most notably by a noticeable increase in congestion due to the volume of cargo outgrowing the space available for handling the surge in traffic. Additionally, a need for infrastructural improvement to enhance effeciency in service delivery as well as competitiveness to other ports in the subregion.

Furthermore, he also shared with parliamentarians how an improved, expanded and well functional Port of Banjul along with a deep sea port in Sanyang will impact the country’s development trajectory. Adding that upgrading the Port will significantly reduce ship turnaround time, reduce congestion and surcharges, thereby, ensuring a reduction in sea freight cost and demurage payments.

Following his presentation, NAMs took turns expressing their interest, and concerns. While some sought clarifications on some of the issues highlighted by MD Jobarteh. Notably, Hon. Yaya Sanyang of the Select Committee on Projects, Hon. Samba Jallow of the Public Enterprises Committee, Hon. Lamin Ceesay of the Select Committee on Trade, all commended the GPA leadership for the foresight in organizing these stakeholder engagements. Additionally, they also commended the GPA for its consistent performance and contribution to the national dividend fund. Other NAMs, including Hon. Almameh Gibba of Foni Kansala, Hon. Omar Jammeh of Janjanbureh, Hon. Muhammed Kanteh of Busumbala and Hon. Abdoulie Njai of Banjul Central, all welcomed the initiative to engage all stakeholders. Meanwhile, some of the NAMs also implored the GPA to provide parliament with a copy of the agreement as they intend to further engage the minister of transport about the project when he next appears before plenary. The committee is expected to meet more stakeholders in the coming days.
