Kingdom of Norway to further collaborate with Mauritius in fisheries industry, states Norwegian Ambassador

The Ambassador-Designate of the Kingdom of Norway to Mauritius, Mr Haakon Einang Gram-Johannessen, called on the Minister of Blue Economy, Marine Resources, Fisheries and Shipping, Mr Sudheer Maudhoo, yesterday, at the LIC Building in Port Louis.

In a statement, the Ambassador said that the meeting was very cordial adding that discussions focused on past and future cooperation within sustainable ocean management. He indicated that both countries have several overlapping interests and expressed the intent of Norway to further collaborate with Mauritius in the fisheries sector.

Mr Gram-Johannessen also stressed on the importance of joining the Blue Justice Initiative which provides technical support mechanisms to assist countries party to the declaration to address transnational organised crime in the global fishing industry.

Issues pertaining to developing aquaculture, technical assistance, and capacity building in seafood quality and safety control as well as joint ventures in marine biotechnology were also evoked.

Norway is one of the world’s leading nations in production from marine fisheries and aquaculture. It is also the world’s second largest exporter of fish and fish products by value and in 2017 Norwegian fish and seafood industry reached an export value of USD 10 billion.
