Liberia – LiMA Commissioner Confers with Barbados Envoy on Maritime Cooperation
The Commissioner/CEO of the Liberia Maritime Authority (LiMA), Cllr. Neto Zarzar Lighe Sr. has held strategic discussions with the High Commissioner of Barbados, H.E. Juliette Bynoe-Sutherland, aimed at strengthening maritime cooperation between Liberia and the Caribbean nation.
The meeting focused on exploring opportunities for collaboration in key areas of maritime governance, registry development, and coastal sustainability, as both countries seek to deepen bilateral engagement in the maritime sector.
Speaking during the engagement, Cllr. Lighe reaffirmed Liberia’s commitment to building partnerships that deliver mutual benefits. He emphasized that Liberia remains open to engaging countries across various maritime and related sectors to expand opportunities and share expertise.
“We are pleased that these discussions are taking place, and the potential for collaboration is vast,” Cllr. Lighe stated. “Beyond these initial conversations, we are particularly interested in understanding the legal and regulatory frameworks within your jurisdiction, especially how they accommodate foreign participation. This is critical to strengthening our engagements globally.”
He further noted that Liberia continues to draw valuable lessons from countries with strong domestic maritime systems. According to him, even nations that may not be dominant players globally often possess robust domestic registries that offer important insights for enhancing Liberia’s own registry program.
For her part, High Commissioner Bynoe-Sutherland underscored Barbados’ interest in fostering cooperation with Liberia, particularly in areas of shared strategic importance. She highlighted coastal conservation as a priority for Barbados, noting that the country is eager to collaborate and exchange knowledge.
Madam Bynoe-Sutherland also expressed interest in learning from Liberia’s established presence in the global maritime sector, describing it as a valuable platform for knowledge sharing and institutional strengthening.
The engagement marks another step in LiMA’s ongoing efforts to build international partnerships and reinforce Liberia’s leadership in maritime administration, while promoting sustainable and inclusive development within the sector.
