Liberia Maritime Authority Leads Anti-Corruption Drive in Maritime Sector

The Liberia Maritime Authority (LiMA) has taken a decisive step in combating corruption within the maritime sector, hosting a high-profile anti-corruption awareness workshop in Monrovia. Themed “Anti-Corruption Awareness in Maritime Traffic,” the event brought together representatives from key government agencies and industry stakeholders to tackle systemic inefficiencies undermining the sector’s growth.

In his opening remarks, LiMA’s Commissioner and CEO, Cllr. Neto Zarzar Lighe Sr., delivered a stern warning against corrupt practices, including bribery and collusion, which have plagued maritime operations. “Such behaviors undermine trust, create bottlenecks, and deter much-needed investments,” he stated.

Commissioner Cllr. Lighe Sr. emphasized the workshop’s focus on actionable reforms to enhance governance and boost service delivery, aligning with President Joseph Nyuma Boakai Sr broader anti-corruption agenda.

Key stakeholders, including representatives from the Liberia Revenue Authority (LRA), National Port Authority of Liberia (NPA), Liberia Immigration Services (LIS), shipping lines, and other industry regulators, participated in the one-day event. Maritime experts led discussions, highlighting risks and solutions to corruption in the sector. Emmanuel Mezoh Dolakeh, Director of Safety Inspection, Survey & Audit at LiMA, outlined specific vulnerabilities, while Atty. Saidu Vasco Nyei, the General Legal Counsel, elaborated on the legal frameworks supporting anti-corruption efforts.

Michael Q. Cooper, Director of Finance and Comptroller at LiMA, presented on issues tied to safety charge dues, emphasizing the need for transparent payment systems. Participants engaged in interactive discussions, proposing practical measures such as tighter oversight mechanisms and streamlined payment processes to curb corruption.

The workshop concluded with a set of recommendations aimed at improving transparency, fostering ethical conduct, and enhancing operational efficiency within the maritime sector. These measures are expected to position Liberia as a global leader in maritime governance, adhering to international best practices, while driving economic growth.
