Nigeria Advocates Stronger Global Maritime Collaboration at the 2026 World Maritime Day Parallel Event

Strengthening international maritime partnerships remains essential to building a safer, more competitive and environmentally sustainable shipping industry.

At the 2026 World Maritime Day Parallel Event in Busan, Republic of Korea, the Director-General of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), Dr. Dayo Mobereola, representing the Honourable Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, His Excellency Adegboyega Oyetola, CON, reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to advancing meaningful international cooperation.

In his remarks, Dr. Mobereola emphasised the importance of translating global maritime engagements into practical partnerships that deliver measurable outcomes, particularly in three critical areas:

  • Strengthening maritime regulation and institutional performance.
  • Expanding professional development and capacity-building opportunities for Nigerian maritime professionals.
  • Leveraging technology exchange, innovation and strategic partnerships to improve the competitiveness of Nigeria’s maritime industry.

The event brought together maritime leaders, policymakers and industry stakeholders to address emerging challenges in global shipping and explore opportunities for sustainable growth.

On the sidelines, Dr. Mobereola also engaged with Mr. Kitack Lim, former Secretary-General of the International Maritime Organization (IMO), recognising his contributions to global maritime development and the importance of continued dialogue among industry leaders.

Nigeria’s participation reinforces the Federal Government’s Marine and Blue Economy agenda and its commitment to translating international cooperation into practical opportunities for national maritime development.

From policy discussions to measurable progress, international collaboration must ultimately deliver value for the industry and the people who drive it.
