Priority to the fight against illegal fishing: Dr Fatou Diouf begins a new era at the Ministry of Fisheries, Maritime Infrastructures and Ports

The fight against illegal fishing is now at the heart of the concerns of the new Minister for Fisheries, Maritime Infrastructures and Ports, Dr Fatou DIOUF. During the handover ceremony with her predecessor Papa Sagna MBAYE, she clearly stated this priority. However, she intends to involve all stakeholders in this fight for better sustainable management of fisheries resources.

At the handover ceremony on Thursday 11 April 2024, Mr Papa Sagna MBAYE passed the torch to Ms Fatou Diouf. In his speech, the outgoing minister expressed his gratitude to President Macky Sall and his Prime Minister Amadou Ba for entrusting him with responsibility for the Department of Fisheries and the Maritime Economy. He also praised the remarkable work of the directors and heads of department throughout his term of office, highlighting the progress made in the development of aquaculture and port infrastructures. Papa Sagna MBAYE concluded his speech by calling on all stakeholders to support the new minister in her role of developing the sector.

For her part, Dr Fatou Diouf expressed her firm determination to work with all stakeholders, advocating the principle of participation that guides the country’s public policies.

She paid tribute to the President of the Republic, His Excellency Bassirou Diomay Diakhar FAYE and to his Prime Minister Ousmane SONKO for their confidence, while thanking her predecessor for his remarkable record. According to her, this handover marks the beginning of a new era for the Ministry, marked by renewal and greater commitment to the sector’s stakeholders.

In her speech, Dr Fatou Diouf emphasised the importance of the participation of all stakeholders in the development of the sector, particularly as regards inland fishing, aquaculture and the management of maritime and port infrastructures. She also stressed the need for irreproachable ethical and deontological behaviour on the part of all public officials, in line with the Head of State’s invitation to fully embody the principles of Jub, Jubal, Jubanti.

The new minister officially took up her duties in the presence of a prestigious audience including some twenty directors, fishermen, fishmongers and women processors. This transition marks the start of a new era for the department of fisheries, maritime and port infrastructures, with the Ousmane Tanor Dieng ministerial sphere in Diamniadio as a backdrop.
