SEYCHELLES COAST GUARD RESPONDS TO VESSEL IN DISTRESS

On the early morning of Monday 21st August 2023, the Seychelles Coast Guard received a distress alert from Indian Coast Guard regarding a sinking Yacht with one personnel onboard, 67 Nautical Miles north of Bird Island.

The Seychelles Coast Guard coordinated with a locally registered fishing vessel, Playa de Azkorri to proceed to the location since they were the closest to the incident area. PS Topaz was also diverted to the incident area.

The person, of Israeli origin, was rescued from his life raft without any injuries by Playa de Azkorrki and handed over to Patrol Ship Topaz upon her arrival. PS Topaz then transported the man back to Mahe where he was handed to the local authorities for medical assistance and further investigation.

The Seychelles Coast Guard would like to thank the captain, crew and agent of fishing vessel Playa de Azkorrki for their swift response, assistance and good seamanship practices.
