Seychelles & Zanzibar Strengthen South-South Cooperation for a Regenerative Blue Economy
From 31 August–4 September 2026, Seychelles welcomed a 13-member delegation from the Revolutionary Government of Zanzibar for a five-day South-South Cooperation Learning Exchange focused on sustainable and regenerative Blue Economy development.
Led by Hon. Makame Sufiani, with IUCN Regional Director Mr. Luther Anukur participating, the delegation explored Seychelles’ experiences in:
- Sustainable fisheries & aquaculture
- Blue finance & marine conservation
- Blue Economy governance & marine spatial planning
- Ecosystem restoration & climate resilience
- Circular economy & fisheries waste valorisation
- Green ports & maritime infrastructure
- Entrepreneurship, innovation & value addition
Visits to Cousin, Moyenne and Silhouette provided practical insights into conservation, ecosystem restoration and protected-area management, while engagements with local entrepreneurs showcased how marine resources and waste can be transformed into new economic opportunities.
The exchange identified opportunities for continued cooperation in blue finance, blue carbon, sustainable tourism, marine research, circular economy, women and youth entrepreneurship, aquaculture, conservation and human-capital development.
As two Indian Ocean island jurisdictions, Seychelles and Zanzibar share many opportunities and challenges in sustainably managing our ocean and coastal resources.
The exchange reinforces a shared vision: healthy oceans, resilient communities and sustainable economic opportunities through a regenerative Blue Economy.
The Department of Blue Economy looks forward to strengthening this partnership and continuing knowledge exchange with Zanzibar and its partners.
