THE GAMBIA NAVY PARTICIPATES IN GANO 2025 PREPARATORY EXERCISES

The Gambia Navy has successfully concluded the preparatory phase for the Grand African Nemo (GANO) 2025 exercise, held in collaboration with other Zone G member states from Sunday 2nd to Sunday 9th November 2025 in Cabo Verde.

This French-funded initiative, conducted under the African Integrated Maritime Strategy, seeks to bolster maritime security, enhance cooperation within the Yaoundé Architecture, and promote stability across the Gulf of Guinea. The exercise was coordinated by the Zone G Multinational Maritime Coordination Centre (MMCC) in Praia, Cabo Verde. Zone G comprises Senegal, Guinea Bissau and The Gambia, with Mauritania and Morocco participating as partner nations.

As part of the GANO 2025 preparations, a Gambia Navy Boarding Team successfully completed Visit, Board, Search and Seizure (VBSS) Level 1 and 2 training. The training was conducted by Force Spéciale Mer (FSM) instructors of the Senegalese Navy at the École de la Marine Nationale (EMAN) in Dakar, Senegal. Through this course, Zone G countries and partner nations strengthened their ability to coordinate responses to key maritime threats, including narcotics trafficking, smuggling, Illegal, Unregulated and Unreported (IUU) fishing, irregular migration and maritime terrorism.
