The RV Akademik Fedorov calls at Port Cape Town, South Africa

The research expedition vessel (RV) «Akademik Fedorov» of the Arctic and Antarctic Research Institute (AARI) called at the Port of Cape Town, South Africa, with members of the 70th Russian Antarctic Expedition (RAE) on board.

The polar explorers that have completed their 70th RAE winter mission will depart for Russia shortly. After replenishing stores and completing the necessary work, the research vessel will continue its expeditionary missions in Antarctica.

The RV «Akademik Fedorov» was built in 1987 by the Finnish company «Rauma-Repola». The vessel is capable of breaking through smooth 1-meter-thick first-year ice at a continuous speed of 2 knots and using ramming icebreaking — in 25-meter-thick ice.
