Visit of the EUNAVFOR Atalanta mission by Heads of Mission of EU Member States accredited to Kenya
Chargé d’affaires a.i. of the Republic of Poland, Mr Marcin Kubiak, participated in the extraordinary meeting in Mombasa of Heads of Missions of the EU Member States accredited to Kenya.
The purpose of the visit was to meet with the Governor of Mombasa County, Abdullswamad Sheriff Nasser, and to visit the Spanish frigate “Victoria”, which is performing combat tasks as part of the European Union’s EUNAVFOR ATALANTA Operation. During a briefing organised by the commander of the 51st rotation of the EU Naval Force in Operation Atalanta, Commodore João Silva, and the ship’s commander, Commander Jorge Fernández de Navarrete, the history, scope of the mandate and current activities of ATALANTA were presented. The mission was established in December 2008 as the EU’s first naval operation in response to the sharp increase in piracy off the coast of Somalia.
The EU’s maritime security activities through Operation ATALANTA are an important part of the broader political dialogue and economic cooperation with Kenya, strengthening the EU’s position as an important and credible partner in the region.
