Namport breaks its own record of handling over 7 million tonnes of cargo in its history
The Namibian Ports Authority recorded a record-breaking amount of cargo handled of 7,691,781 tonnes during the 2022/2023 financial year (ending 31 March 2023) in comparison to the amount of cargo handled of 6,576,370 tonnes in the previous financial year and a notable 17% year-on-year increase in cargo handling.
The major contributor is due to the exportation of goods, including salt, base metals, coal, copper concentrate, copper, ship spares, other minerals, Sulphur, frozen fish, petroleum products, and lubricating oil recording a significant 44% increase in comparison to the previous financial year. Additionally, the entity recorded a commendable 9% increase in the importation of goods in comparison to the previous financial year.
During the financial period ended, the number of vessels calling Namibian ports increased by 3%, amounting to forty-four (44) additional port calls.
This increase can be attributed to greater calls by dry bulk, petroleum, passenger, reefer, patrol, and research vessels. As a result, the vessels’ gross tonnages increased by 2.9 million tonnes or 14.9% compared to the previous financial year.
The financial year under review also recorded an increased occupancy rate of the Syncrolift facilities. The repair jetties’ occupancy rose from 54% to 64%, while the repair bays’ occupancy increased from 47% to 52% respectively.
Namport’s committed workforce and the customers’ trust in using the Ports Authority’s amenities directly contributed to these positive operations.
Namport continues to pursue its vision of becoming the best-performing seaports in Africa.
